THE MASTER ACTIONS LIST
The largest, most important, most dynamically changing and most used list is your ‘Master Actions List’. It’s similar to the kinds of to-do lists you might have intuitively created or read about in some of the old time management books, but there are also some fundamental differences:
It’s a Master Actions List. As such, it contains every single action you could currently do, for each and every project.
Most project plans, Gantt charts and the like map out too many possible milestones for months in advance and inevitably need to be changed when the world changes. Guess what: the world does change – all the time! It doesn’t hurt to have a few milestones in mind for a project, but in terms of actions, we’re going to regularly stay on top of all the possible things that could be happening with each project. There may only be one thing, there may be several. We’re only interested in the things that could be done right now, so there’s no need to track future items that are dependent on the outcomes of more immediate things. For example, if you’re organising an event and you have to find the best location, you would record the actions that relate to your venue search on the master actions list, but you can’t yet record the sending out of the invitations on there, because you’ll need the venue details for the invitation.
